How to be a Spiritual Entrepreneur

When I first “came out” as a Medium, I was met with a lot of curiosity mixed with skepticism from most of friends and corporate contacts. After all going from a very international background in journalism, NGO, charity and then corporate marketing and events to a Spiritual career was a big change.

One minute I was at the RAI in Amsterdam talking about apps and IT management tools to “crystals and healing”

I went from business suits and high heels to smart casual. Employed to self employed.

I was very much out of my comfort zone being an entrepreneur. No, don’t tell me that because it is spiritual that you aren’t one.

Entrepreneur is a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit.

So I was rather naïve, felt the imposter syndrome and allowed other more experienced “Spiritual” people intimidate me.

So called “Spiritual” narcissist do exist and come in the form of wanting to help and support. You will sniff them out eventually.

I was bullied, used and allowed myself to be led. I learned my lesson, moved away from passive aggressive, ego-led so called Spiritual people and those with the fake spiritual façade.

I stand my ground a lot more, be more selective about who and what I want to be involved in. Even if the popular thing to do is to butter up the “Influencers” to get noticed, unless they are vibrating on the same level then I will step aside and let them get on in their journey.

A few years on, I am more comfortable being self employed with a blossoming business and lovely group of people who support my work. I don’t need to be popular and neither do I need to be right. I just work from the heart and do my best to make the best out of life.

So many wonderful opportunities have opened up and so much growth from within and in my work which encourages me to work harder.

So if you are starting out in your journey don’t be disappointed by the shadows you may encounter when you start out. You will find your feet, genuine friendships and support.

You will also find your niche, and the strength to say “no thanks”. You will probably start out as a people pleaser, not wanting to step on any toes and led by the need to be accepted, but that is your EGO speaking. Learn from every mistake and people who you meet because you will have to go through the hard bit, just like any other entrepreneur. Being spiritual doesn’t make you exempt from difficulties and mistakes.

Just because you are psychic doesn’t mean you are in tune ALL the time. You will struggle with the inner voice and question why all the way. BUT somewhere in all of that you will learn to trust the right people, be clear on your offering and attract the right clients.

Have all the important official elements in place — tax, insurance, website, and cards. Invest time in reading up about how to use the different social media channels, payment methods and most importantly, Terms & Conditions.

People in the spiritual business struggle with their value because you are likely to start off in your home which may is a sensible option to begin with. The problem with that is you will not value your time as you are “home” and doesn’t feel like work. Your clients will get too comfortable and the divide between work and home life will be blurred. As a service and not a product, you will not have much to show which can impact your personal value. Remember that each time you do a reading or healing, it is costing you.

Each session includes the electricity, water or drinks you provide (water usage, electricity for kettle etc), incense if you want, the furniture you may have purchased to set the room to your insurance and website/domain cost.

I know, I know…..”You should not be charging for your gift” Yes that old argument. My grandmother was a psychic and healer. People brought her rice, vegetables and other edible gifts. She never valued her time and ended up sitting around for hours into the night often hungry and thirsty, helping people because she felt she had to.

First of all its not a GIFT. It is an ability that everyone has. Not all of us are aware of or want to acknowledge. There is the thing as well — not everyone has a calling to be a lightworker.

Now you are not charging for your ABILITY. You charge for your time. Just like any accountant, lawyer, marketing expert or a masseur. Behind these commonly known professions, the charges reflect the time and effort they have put into their craft. So what makes you different?

I have spent thousands on learning and developing my mediumship. I am good at what I do and I am always learning. Some courses involve hotels, train cost, mileage, food and tuition.

So remember you are charging for your time and your overheads.

The most important thing is to be good what you do. Start with one ability or skill. Don’t run before you walk. Get confidence, expertise and knowledge with one or two service first. It may be intimidating at first seeing people tagging themselves as “mentor”, “expert”, “leader” ,“teacher” , “strategist” does not mean they are any better than you. A lot of people get very anxious and feel they need to big themselves up and try to be everything to anyone.

Give yourself time to develop your brand and identity. Empaths will be extremely sensitive and want to do too much. So the journey becomes very emotional and expectation is often unrealistic.

Take time to know your craft well and let your clients and followers call you a leader or an expert. You cannot go from zero to hero in one go.

The most important thing is to acknowledge that you are a business. Be professional at all times. Having that as a structure means you will have good business practises and be a little hardnosed when you need to be.

The spiritual industry is largely unregulated and clients have very unrealistic expectations based on past experiences. You need to set your standards and be aware of what you will and will not do.

Your biggest selling point will be your passion and your clarity.

Be patient and be your own person.

Good Luck and please leave a comment if you have any useful tips or have questions.
